Starting in the bustling city of Kathmandu, you’ll meet your team and guides who’ll be joining you for the next 18 days. Enjoy your first taste of Nepali food and drink before resting. Waking up in Kathmandu it’s time to explore the city in more detail! Soak in the sights as we take you around the gems of Nepal, into ancient cities and introduce you to the culture, religion and rich history Nepal was founded on with the help of our expert local guides. The rest of the evening is yours to enjoy, why not relax with a well deserved massage or try your hand at bartering in the local shops. Tomorrow we begin our search for gold along the Sun Koshi River!
The Sun Koshi offers expedition like no other. It will challenge you, bring you out of your comfort zone but reward you with great rapids, fun and sensational rural scenery. All our gear will float down the river with our trusty pack raft guides. So while we get wet on the wild rapids, you can be sure your gear is nice and dry. At the end of each day we’ll work as a team to erect our campsite. The faster the camp is up, the faster dinner is ready and most importantly, the faster we can kick back, enjoy the roar of the river and a good beer!
Joining the Gold Rush team down the Sun Koshi takes you from the center of Nepal, all the way to the far eastern corner, the border of India! Not many expeditions can cover so much of a country in 18 days! The landscape will change day by day as you move out of the Himalayan foothills and into the Teri lowlands. The local wildlife are bound to make an appearance so keep an eye out for Monkeys, Parrots and even Leopards!
Our evenings will be spent around campfires, eating good food, sharing stories and star gazing! With no other light around the skies here are some of the clearest around, so don’t forget to look up from time to time!
From the end of Sun Kohsi it’s time to get back to Kathmandu. Instead of enduring a 15 hour bus journey we will hop on a short flight back to Kathmandu. Arriving back in the late evening it’s time for a well deserved shower, good hearty meal and a beer to celebrate the end of our incredible river expedition! We rest up in Kathmandu for an extra day to give you some well needed R&R before we move on to our next destination!
Enjoy a hearty breakfast before heading to the airport. Make sure to grab a window seat as the views on this flight will be ones to look at! Arriving in Pokhara the rest of the day is yours to explore! If you’re still tired from the expedition, here is the place to visit a spa for some well needed R&R. Explore around Fewa Lake, the heart of Pokhara and the best place to watch a sunset. If you’re lucky, the Himalayas will be there to greet us in the morning!
Now it’s time to get you into the arms of the Nepali communities. Hop in the 4x4 private jeeps, enjoy the views as we head out of Pokhara and into the Syangja district. Here we work closely with the communities through rotary projects and we want to introduce you to the families that have welcomed us into their homes. Sirubari is a homestay village who will open their doors to you. You will stay with a local family in their home that’s been in their family for generations. Nestled high in the mountains you’ll experience rural living at it’s finest, learn about the culture, the religion and their day to day lives.
Staying in Sirubari is your chance to relax and explore. But if you’re energy levels are still high we have a great day hike to take you on. Hiking up to visit the Hindu Yogis living high up the mountainside in their search for enlightenment is our first stop. From then, it’s the summit. At the top stands an old Hindu Shrine to the gods, wrapped in prayer flags and scattered with offerings the summit is easily mistaken for a classic ‘view point’ when in fact it is a religious accomplishment for many people. Looping back down we stop at a view tower giving you aerial shots of Sirubari and the neighbouring hamlets. Look far into the valley and watch the clouds dance between the mountains before returning back to your family home. Don’t get too comfortable, it’s now time to put on those dancing shoes at the community cultural event. The locals turn out to sing, dance and play the local music and everyone is encouraged to join in!
Our final day in Sirubari, you have the morning to say goodbye to your new found families as we walk out of the village. Walking out we head to the saddle of the peaks above Panchamul, we climb a short 500 metres before dropping 1000 metres into the Andhi Khola Valley below. Before the full descent begins we’ll stop at a secret local teahouse for a break here, we offer the option of hopping in the comfortable 4x4 if you don’t want to continue the rest of the hike. The views down into the Andhi Khola are sensational and well worth hiking down for. Hike done, we head for Pokhara. Arriving mid afternoon the rest of the day is yours to explore. Take a walk around Fewa Lake, relax with a beer or simply chill out on the roof. Tomorrow, has an early start!
The best sunset is one with mountains right? Well the Himalayas are some of the best mountains around! If you want to see them in all their glory it’s an early wake up call, taxi ride and small hike to an incredible viewpoint. Watch the sun hit the towering himalayas, lighting them in a beautiful alpine glow. There’s not a better way to wake up in the morning than with a sunrise quite like this. Back down for breakfast the rest of the day can be spent visiting the peace pagoda and taking a boat across the lake with your guides or choose to spend your day doing what you want, enjoy a spa, go shopping or simply explore!
Time to say goodbye to the beautiful town of Pokhara as we fly back to Kathmandu where you will have plenty of time to grab last minute souvenirs before we meet up for our final dinner together.
Arrival and Welcome Meal
Arrive at Kathmandu Airport, where you will be greeted by a member of our team and taken to your hotel. Once everyone has arrived, in the evening we will have a team meeting and Welcome Meal where we will all get to know each other and prepare for the adventure to come!
Explore the Kathmandu Valley, an area that combines natural heritage and cultural experiences. Enjoy visits to city squares, magnificent temples and take in outstanding panoramic views of mountains and cityscapes. Let our guides teach you the history of this ancient city with their in-depth knowledge and enthusiasm.
Travel to Sun Koshi and start Rafting!
Leave Kathmandu early in the morning to the start of the river (approx. 3 hours). When we arrive watch the guides spring into action unloading all the gear and pumping up the rafts – they would appreciate a hand though too! After lunch there will be a safety briefing before we jump on the river and start the expedition. The river starts off easy here will some class 2 rapids. We might even be able to stop off at a local Hindu temple to bless the trip, if you are lucky. We will be camping on a river beach, spend the evening relaxing under the stars.
Rafting the Sun Koshi
Once we’ve had breakfast and packed up camp, we continue our way downstream. The river starts to increase in volume as the Tamba Kosi joins. Today gets more exciting as we pass through more notable rapids such as “No Exit” and “Meatgrinder”. There are some flat sections too – these are great for trying some cliff jumping! In the evening we set up camp and then have some free time. There are plenty of things to do from simply relaxing, exploring the area, or even learn to kayak and give rolling a try!
Rafting the Sun Koshi
Wake to a boiled Kettle and food ready to be eaten. The river keeps on getting bigger and bigger as more tributaries keep joining the Sun Koshi. The main event today is just after the Liku Khola joins and created the Anxiety series of rapids: Pre, Post, and High Anxiety! Again there will be plenty of time to enjoy the flatter sections of warm water. Here you can have a go a kayaking and learn some key skills about reading the water and safely making your way across the river. Once camp is set up we can enjoy a game of football with the locals who will probably stay for a sing song around the camp fire and watch the sun go down.
Rafting the Sun Koshi
This is it, the day you’ve all been waiting for – Hakapur! The biggest commercially rafted rapid in Nepal! We will stop before the rapid to look at it to decide how to approach. Depending on river levels the rafts might have to walk round the first section as it may be un-runnable. But if it is – get ready for the craziest roller coaster of your life, and you will defiantly get wet! Gather your thoughts quickly as you are swiftly swept into Hakapur 2, sometimes even better than the first! Tonight we will camp by a very special river – the Dudh Kosi. This is the river that runs off Everest.
Day 7 – 10
Rafting the Sun Koshi
In the coming few days you can expect "Jaws" I, II & III' , "Rhino Rock" and “Jungle Corridor” which is basically 10km of non-stop rapid with big bouncy waves finished off with "Rollacoaster" which if you are in the mood is a safe place for us to flip the raft! A highlight of these days is the big impressive waterfall we will stop at for a well deserved shower.
The "Big Dipper" and "Black Hole" are the last big rapids on the river and a fitting finale to the Sun Kosi. You will notice the difference in scenery as the jungle dissapears along with the mountains making way for the flat Indian Plains. For those that dare, you may also have to opportunity to jump off a 30ft bridge into the river below and depending on the water levels.
Just after the confluence of the Arun and Tamur rivers we will stop at a Holy Hindu temple to view the sights. After this it is a quick 20 minute flat paddle to the take out, Chatra, where we will unload the gear one final time and jump in the bus for a quick journey to the airport. You'll take a plane back to Kathmandu to save us a 13 hour bus drive, so much better! Once back in Kathmandu there is plenty of time for you to get some R&R. Have a long awaited shower and some restaurant food to get ready for the next stage in the journey.

You are encouraged to join in - you'll regret it if you don't!

Depending on how you are feeling, you have the option to join the luggage in the 4x4 all the way back to Pokhara or you can take a trekking experience like no other! Walk along the valley side to a saddle on the mountain ridge. Cross the saddle and head back down what seems like the steepest staircase in the world! We shall have a chilled evening in Pokhara eating out at a restaurant and staying in a hotel.
Pokhara Day Tour
Wake in the dark (approx. 5:30am) to be driven up to the top of Sarangkot. Here we wait to marvel at the stunning Annapurna Sunrise.
