The Trisuli is the classic and most common river for white water rafting in Nepal. It is the beating heart of Nepal’s rafting Industry. This river is where commercial white whitewater rafting in Nepal started and is still Nepal’s most popular river. It has also become the home of the Himalayan white water Festival/Challenge that happens every year in late November.
Its large rapids are balanced out by other easier sections. Local legend has it that the god Shiva drove his trident into the ground to create three springs high up in the Himalayan Mountains where this river has its source - hence the name 'Tri-suli'.
One of the reasons for its popularity is the easy access from the main Kathmandu - Pokhara highway. The highway follows the river for much of the journey. It is a great way to break up the journey between Kathmandu and Pokhara which can easily take 8 hours on a good day. Break it up into smaller sections and enjoy your journey in a whitewater raft!
It take about 3 hours out of Kathamandu (depending on traffic) to get to the put on for the Trisuli at Chauraudi. Once you arrive you'll kit up and jump on the river after a quick safety brief. The first hour of white white water rafting is quite calm. The river is only grade 2 or 3 here. We'll stop on a river beach for some much needed lunch in the sun.
Once you have your bellies filled, jump back on the river and get thrown into some meaty grade 3 and 4 white water such as 'Upset', 'Surprise' and 'Ladies Delight'. They'll make you hold on for dear life! Fortunately this is a 'pool-drop' river. This means that after each rapid there is a section of flat water that allows you to pick up the pieces and collect your wits before the next rapid! Through our the day are plenty of scenic views as you travel down an impressive gorge and pass terraces with villagers busy at work.
Fishling normally marks the end of the first day rafting. You can easily get off hear and drive back to Kathmandu to Pokhara. Or you can stay on the river and float down to your campsite.
The Trisuli has mostly grade 3 rapids with some grade 4. There is plenty of time to chill out, play, do some cliff jumps, swim, and soak up the surreal atmosphere of Nepal’s river life. With it also being just a stone’s throw away from Kathmandu, makes it a perfect river to start on and warm up for your multi-river trip.
